As social care remains in the public spotlight in the run-up to the General Election in 2010, a number of important events focusing on care for the elderly and disabled are planned across the UK. Here, we list some of the conferences and other events which will be helping to set the agenda for social care in the next 12 months.

Event: Supporting Older People Conference 2009.
Venue: De Vere West One, London.
Details: Chance to focus on the future of supporting older people in Britain. The National Housing Federation conference will provide insights in how to create housing and services to meet a wide variety of needs for current and future generations.

Event: First National Debate: The reform of adult social care law.
Venue: Le Meridien, Piccadilly, London.
Details: AssessForCare are working with the Law Commission to provide a platform for their public consultation on the reform of adult social care law and to stimulate public debate. This event provides the opportunity to discuss the Law Commission’s forthcoming consultation paper on the reform of adult social care law. The keynote address will be made by Lord Justice Munby, Chairman of the Law Commission and Professor Suzy Braye from Sussex University will be in the Chair.

Event: Counsel and Care 5th National Conference – delivering quality care.

Details: The conference will address the six key elements that people can expect from a national social care service: access to prevention services; a joined up service; appropriate information and advice; personalised care and support and fair funding.

Event: Delivering the National Dementia Strategy.
Venue: The Radisson SAS Portman Hotel, 22 Portman Square, London.
Details: Laing & Buisson conference addressing the challenges, opportunities and the future of dementia care.
Speakers include: Neil Hunt, Chair of the External Reference Group for the development of the National Dementia Strategy for England, and a member of the board of Alzheimer Europe; Jerry Bird, the project manager on developing the National Dementia Strategy and is currently project managing its implementation; Claire Goodchild, who leads the national programmes for improved community personal support and commissioning dementia services; Dr Nick Hutchinson, who works in the NHS as a clinical psychologist in a community team for adults with learning disabilities. Part of his role involves running a dementia clinic for adults with learning disabilities.

Event: National Joint Social Care & Home Care Conference.
Venue: Midland Hotel, Peter Street, Manchester.
Details: UNISON’s National Social Care and Home Care Forums are hosting this joint conference for members working in social care and home care. The aim is to bring together UNISON members working in social care home care to share experiences and inform UNISON policy. There will be a series of workshops focusing on personalisation of social care, recruitment of personal assistants-Pas, TUPE and privatisation in home care, vetting and barring (ISA).
